Caught on Camera! What’s What’s Backyard Nature Cam

A rather rambunctious outing for the racoons having a rassle over the backyard birdbath.

A reminder that we share this world – or should

The old man and I are largely back yard and back porch dwellers, something we’ve resorted to in these, our “golden years, when working in the garden sometimes leads to a surprise encounter with something wild that stops by on occasion or regularly, it turns out, when we are fast asleep.

After tending to my brain game training activities – Wordle, Connections, Crossword, etc. – my next morning activity of late is to grab a cup of coffee, head for the porch and connect with the nature cam the old man got for Father’s Day along with the weather station perched in the side garden that gives us all sorts of outside weather info, because the kids get that get what we are into at this time of our lives.

There is a sense of purpose in knowing that we still share this world with other creatures despite the development cropping up around us; that we can create our a backyard ecosystem that can serve the encroached that have lost their habitats and now that make a path along a fence line or stop in for a sip – or a dip – in the backyard birdbath.

It’s also entertainment, a reason for a chuckle as morning breaks. A fun way to start the day. I’m sharing that with you. Check it out. I’ll be adding new videos and photos regularly – we start with one and build from there – so do come back to see what’s new.

Uh, oh. Unwanted company

Oopsie!

Came out to find the bird bath tipped over, so moved the nature cam to see what might have done that. Turns out a female raccoon comes by for a drink regularly. (July 2025)

Turns out there are two!

In my version of this Back Porch View Scenario – which went on for a good 15 minutes before we left them to their own devices – an adult possum tries to coax a Joey back along the fence line. The little one was stuck in place for a while, keeping a wary eye on us, keeping an eye on us – and the adult who got a sassy hiss for their efforts. We left for the beach, and when we came back, they were gone.
