What’s What New Port Richey

Celebratory events for the City of Port Richey’s upcoming Centennial are unfolding with a range of activities held over two months, with the culminating event featuring fireworks and a tribute to Port Richey summer visitor, the late Johnny Cash who spent some time fishing a resting up with his inlaws on a little summer cottage in Miller’s Bayou.

While this celebration is held on the heels of the City of New Port Richey’s Centennial in October 2024, it turns out that Port Richey was first on the map as far as local settlements go.

Aaron McLaughlin Richey, a furniture maker from Missouri, settled with his family on land on the mouth of the Pithlachascotee River and established the Port Richey post office in his home in 1884.* New Port Richey’s first post office was established nearly 20 years later in 1915. Even so, Port Richey was incorporated as a municipality in May of 1925, just after the incorporation of the City of New Port Richey in October of 1924.

Logging 100 years is certainly something for the 3,000 + city residents to make note of as the city and the waterfront look to be changing with the recent sale of the former Gill Dawg’s property to the west of US Highway 19, said Mayor John Hoover, who will be hosting a 1920s-themed ball on May 16.

“It’s an exciting time. A 100-year milestone,” he said, adding. “We want people to participate. To have fun and celebrate that milestone.”

Other events listed on the city’s website include a festival and parade, including golf carts for those who want to participate, a fishing tournament, a golf scramble, a car show & food truck fest, a business expo, and fireworks.
