PASCO COUNTY, FL —- Following several positive cases of Canine Pneumovirus, Pasco County Animal Services (PCAS) is closing dog adoptions, intakes, surgery, and rescue transfers for the next 14 days.

PCAS will remain open for cat-only adoptions, surgeries, rescue transfers, vaccine & microchip clinics, pet licensing, and owner-requested euthanasia needs.

“The health and safety of the animals in our care, as well as our community, has been and will
always be our top priority,” said PCAS Director Mike Shumate. “While we understand this is an
inconvenience for our residents, we appreciate your understanding during this time.”

We will resume normal operations on May 3, 2025. Recent adopters and rescue operations will be
notified of any precautions that should be taken.

Our team is closely monitoring the dogs, providing care and testing to ensure healthy results.
While highly contagious to other dogs, the Pneumovirus is not contagious to other species,
including humans and cats. However, it may spread to dogs through contact with people who have
been exposed to the virus. Based on guidance from veterinary professionals, we believe this virus
may be present in our community.

If your pet experiences symptoms such as lethargy, fever, rapid breathing, coughing, sneezing,
nasal discharge, and conjunctivitis, please contact your veterinarian. Illnesses are common in pet shelters. Although PCAS strives to provide quality preventative care and treatment, diseases cannot always be avoided.

If you find a lost pet, we encourage you to visit MyPasco.net/PAS for tips on how to find the owner.
