~~Annual countywide event prevents debris from entering waters~~

Pasco Media Relations & Communications

PASCO COUNTY, FL  —-  Our community pulled together once again, showing its commitment to protecting Pasco County’s environment!  More than 1,360 volunteers took part in the annual Keep Pasco Beautiful cleanup event in September, collecting over 31 tons of trash along roadways, public spaces, and waterways.

By the numbers:

  • 62,000 lbs. of trash collected
  • 59 locations in Pasco County
  • 1,363 volunteers
  • 4,787 volunteer hours logged

§  $160,316.63 cost-benefit

(Volunteer Time Value)

“It’s estimated that 80 percent of the trash in our waters originates from land,” says Keep Pasco Beautiful Coordinator Ligia Buchala.  “Thirty-one tons is the most we’ve ever collected, and by doing this we’re stopping trash from moving through rivers and stormwater systems into the Gulf of Mexico – which is truly impactful!”

The event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup coordinated by Ocean Conservancy.  Since 1986, this worldwide event has collected more than 380 million pounds of trash with the help of around 18 million volunteers.
