This Week’s Slide Show

Emerging Monarch Butterfly on Penta PHOTO | MICHELE MILLER

I have an affinity for butterflies so of course, I grabbed the camera when the old man called me out to his man space to show me the butterfly that had recently emerged and was resting on the garage floor. Sadly, this one came with a bent wing – perhaps from a faulty rebirthing or bad landing after spinning its cocoon in a precarious setting – maybe the garage door. With it clearly struggling the old man gingerly offered his finger then moved it to a pink Penta with hopes it would pump its wings and fly off to live another day in this new world.

In between checking on its progress I got to Internet searching and learned that monarchs typically live two to six weeks, save for the last generation of the year, which can live eight to nine months.

It’s a brief life to us, as is ours to the Greenland Shark or an ocean-floor dwelling Tubeworm, which according to a website called livescience.com can live 250 and 300 + years respectively.

Life is short no matter the perspective – make the most of your week – starting today.
