Stepping Out into the Great Outdoors | October 2024

Birding, biking, fishing, plant sales, pop-up markets, fall fests & spooky and not-so-spooky Halloween events are on the agenda.

October 1, 2024

Note – Since original publication, we have learned that organizers of the Cotee River Bike Fest have opted to postpone the event until January 2025. Word to the wise – access accompanying links or check ahead to make sure they are still happening. Will do our best to let you know when we know.

What’s What New Port Richey

Helene’s aftermath has left quite a mess to be cleaned up in Pasco County Parks especially in hard hit coastal areas and with that, a fair share of activities are on hold or canceled until the parks are back in shape and open for visitors.

As I write this on the 30th day of September, the following parks have been temporarily closed – Anclote Gulf Park, Anclote River Park, Key Vista Nature Park, Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex Ball Fields, Sunwest Park, Robert J. Strickland Memorial Park (Hudson Beach), Robert K. Rees Memorial Park (Green Key Beach), Moon Lake Park and J. Ben Harrill Recreation Complex. On Pasco’s west side, Jay. B. Starkey Park is still open. The County Parks Dept promises to update so once they do that will be reflected here and on the calendar when and if new events are added.

So in other words, check back. And a word to the wise – if you find an event you want to attend that’s listed below click the accompanying links provided or investigate further to make sure they have not been cancelled by the organizers.

Even with Mother Nature’s awful hit, there are some events well worth getting out for – birding walks and bike rides with Pasco Audubon at Starkey Park and a birding walk at the Centennial Park Library. A Family Fishing Day at Withlacoochee River Park on October 12 in Dade City with a river view that is a lovely take if you have not been there already. The Pioneer Florida Museum in Dade City hosts its annual Scarecrow Fest on the same day if you’re up for a “two-fer.” Maybe check out the lovely Dade City downtown. Grab some lunch at Pancho Villa’s in San Antonio on the way back and call it a day.

The West Pasco Historical Society continues its Centennial Walking Tours in downtown New Port Richey with two offerings this month.

For a little outdoor music on the quieter side check out the NPR Library’s music events – the Riverside Concert Series and a Johnny Cash Centennial tribute – both in Sims Park.

There’s some fall fests sprinkled throughout the month and Halloween events gear up closer to the 31st. What we have so far is listed below. Add to that Market Days, plant sales, gardening seminars and some ongoing events you might want to make a habit of.

It all adds up to plenty to do and more to come as we take another step in the recovery process.

Now get on out there.

Peace – M

A good fishing spot and the best skies at Anclote Gulf Park Pier in Holiday. The park along with others are presently closed while undergoing a clean-up after Hurricane Helene blew in a devastating storm surge in late September 2024.
