What’s What New Port Richey
The annual celebration started as it always does – with a prayer – before those who bundled up to brave the cold commenced on the traditional commemorative march from the Union Baptist Church down Pine Hill Road to the historic Booker T. Washington School and home of the African American Club of Pasco.
It was standing room only as the two local dignitaries in attendance – NPR City Manager Debbie Mann and former NPR Mayor, Rob Marlowe – were acknowledged along with club leaders.
The celebration of the life of Dr. Marin Luther King Jr. featured a handful of speeches from members of the local faith community following the theme of shining “light in the darkness” and threaded with the gentle reminder that the light exudes a wider with a unified effort.
The program was punctuated by the showing of Dr. King’s historic I Have a Dream speech that was famously delivered in August of 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. , the poetry of Maya Angelou and most delightfully, performances by local youth exhibiting a budding talent and a reflection of a community’s nurturing efforts to lend a light on what the future could hold.
