Check out the What's What New Port Richey Calendar of Garden Events for July

July 2026

The heat and humidity have been relentless, the little patches of rain a blessing as we ride what’s often thought of as the dormant season in these parts. Even so, we’ve been harvesting sweet potato leaves as a spinach substitute for soups and salads – a nutritious member of the morning glory family that’s lauded in Asia and Pacific countries, with health benefits that can be reaped well before the harvesting of its tubers in November. A couple of pepper plants are showing a little promise. Seminole and kabocha squash are making some headway, and there might be a handful of avocados to look forward to, if the squirrels don’t get to them first.

We’ve been feeding the compost pile, which is on the way to becoming what gardeners refer to as “black gold” – something you can learn more about at one of the workshops/seminars being offered this month.

There are several being offered – mostly at libraries throughout Pasco County – where Master Gardeners from the UF/IFAS Pasco County Extension come to offer their expertise to those wanting to learn more about gardening the Florida way. Scroll down for events listed by date, area organizations to join or learn from, and a monthly calendar on edibles that can be planted or tended to this month.

Okra Occasion, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, September 12, at the New Port Richey Library

A little-known fact – Okra is most widely known as a vegetable, but since it has seeds, it is actually a fruit.

It’s also one of the vegetables that can withstand, rather, flourish in Florida’s tropical summer climate.

And while it’s an essential in many cultural and regional dishes, okra sometimes gets a bad rap – one this event seeks to dispel with education and a variety of okra-inspired recipes and concoctions.

Sweet Potato Round-up, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, November 21, at the New Port Richey Library

Buy and taste local sweet potatoes at this annual event, which, per usual, offers an educational spin for those interested in planting their own crop. And while November is typically harvest time for the sweet potato in these parts, those in the know have been delighting in sweet potato greens, considered a delicacy in asian cultures, throughout the summer months.
