“It’s been a while old friend,” I think as I pull a favorite folksy elf out of the green and red ornament box. His delightful reappearance never fails to muster a smile, earning him a front-and-center spot he secured ever since he came into being. He was gifted to me by a dear friend sometime in the years after kids and well before grandkids and (thankfully) the arrival of the new-fangled Elf on a Shelf that these days is meant to induce good behavior for modern believers.
Too much work I’m thinking recalling how tough it was to keep on top of the tooth fairy all those years ago.
Our elf is a rather rustic fellow. He doesn’t spy or need extra wrapping like some of the more delicate baubles that command a sturdy upper branch. He has ruddy cheeks and a “been around the world and back again” kind of demeanor along with a mission it seems as he strings along a couple of tin stars and a crescent moon. I like to think that he’s granting a magical wish or perhaps following up on a declaration of love that seems impossible but maybe isn’t.
“I’d give you the moon and the stars if I could.”
Thank you, Santa.
Now onward.

I admit, I was a little apprehensive about sitting on the other side of the interview. Research shows that most of us don’t like hearing the sound of our voice when it’s played back to us. But, it actually turned out pretty well. But Chris Klein and Dylan Gamez – co-chairs of the promotions committee, did a really good job and putting me at ease and carrying on what turned out to be a very pleasant conversation.
And you don’t have to stop there. NPR Main Street has recorded several podcasts featuring local businesses and individuals. You can check out the Podcast Menu here.
