What’s What New Port Richey
Those who have ventured into the field of Florida gardening get to understand real quick that there’s a learning curve – especially if you’re from somewhere else.
Florida’s climate, flora, and soil are unique. Compost and soil building are a must, for instance. And while there’s still time to get the winter garden going, springtime ends up being too late to plant most things, save for sweet potatoes, okra, and cover crops to help build soil for fall planting.
Fortunately, we have a laudable county Master Gardener Program via the UF/IFAS Pasco Extension. These volunteers make the rounds to libraries and other venues to help educate. And turns out they are getting to ready to start the next class for those interested in volunteering. You’ll find info on that below.

UF/IFAS Pasco County Extension | Florida-Friendly Landscaping: Planting for Pollinators 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3 at the Centennial Park Library in Holiday

This presentation will provide information on central Florida landscape practices that draw in pollinators.

UF/IFAS Pasco County Extension | Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ – Reduce Stormwater Runoff (webinar), 4 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 4

Stormwater control features can be a beautiful addition to your landscape. Creating shallow rain gardens or shaping the earth on slopes with berms (rises) and swales (dips), can help slow runoff from heavy rains and allow the water time to soak into the ground.

UF/IFAS Pasco County Extension | Repotting Grocery Store Orchids, 2 – 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 16 at the Daniel A. Cannon Memorial Library at St. Leo University in St. Leo

Orchids are not the finicky plants often expected. The presentation will cover repotting grocery store type orchids, including pots, growing mediums and techniques used. Information on care will be included so that homeowners can enjoy continued blooming of their gifted or purchased orchid.
